Mastering Creative Time: Tiny Steps, Giant Leaps

Writer's picture: Monica BalboMonica Balbo

Are you feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list? Staring blankly at a canvas, or a page? Don't worry, you're not alone. I’ve been there too. But what if I told you the secret to unlocking your creativity isn't about grand gestures but tiny, achievable steps?

Let’s talk about time. Or rather, how to stop letting time control your creativity.

I used to set big goals and expect to achieve them all at once. When I couldn't, I'd feel frustrated and like a failure. Sound familiar?

By adopting the Tiny Step rule, I’ve achieved so much more. Waiting for large chunks of time to dedicate to creativity often meant I never got started. But now, by focusing on small, manageable steps, I make progress every day.

We often think we need huge chunks of uninterrupted time to be creative. That’s a MYTH! We can actually HARNESS those small pockets of time – five minutes here, ten minutes there – to make significant progress.

The Power of Five Minutes

You know that book you’ve been wanting to write? Or that massive pile of laundry?(I know that might not be artistic but still..) Or that unfinished painting? How often have you put off starting a creative project because you felt you didn't have enough time? Maybe you’ve got a busy schedule, fear you won't do it properly, or simply don't know where to start. These are all common blocks that can feel paralysing so why not break it down into laughably simple steps that you can accomplish daily (or daily-ish, as we like to say)?

Your first step might be as simple as touching the laundry basket, or picking up a paintbrush (or finding it if you had to pack it away), or opening up your computer to write. That's it.

Rewiring Your Brain

Sounds ridiculous, right? So why is this so effective?

Because here’s the thing: anything perceived as new or big or important is scary for us on a primitive level, but by setting such a tiny, achievable goal, you’re actually rewiring your brain to view these tasks as manageable. It eliminates the fear and resistance often associated with starting something new or daunting.

You're training your brain to see tasks as less intimidating and more doable. And guess what? Once you’ve taken that first step chances are you’ll be inspired to keep going and you’ll go beyond your initial goal. You might find yourself writing a whole page or chapter, or folding more than just two pieces of clothing.

The Power of Small Wins: From Frustration to Fulfillment

So you can see this isn’t about lowering the bar or settling for less. It's about breaking tasks down into easy, bite-sized pieces that you can handle without feeling overwhelmed.

When you consistently meet these small goals you build momentum, a sense of accomplishment and a habit of success. Your self-confidence grows and your brain starts to believe you can realise anything you set your mind to.

These tiny victories add up, propelling you toward your larger creative dreams and soon you’ll find yourself tackling bigger tasks with enthusiasm.

So, next time you're facing a creative block, whether it’s painting, jogging, writing or even tackling a mountain of laundry, remember: start small, stay consistent, and celebrate your progress!
